BLOWN ASHORE IN 68 KNOT WINDS!

September, 2007

Well, this is the first time since 2004 that we have updated our site.  We have been working and traveling (plane) a lot the last few years, so our sailing adventures have been few.  However, Mother Nature has seen fit to bring one our way...in the form of a 68 knot storm.

This storm did a huge amount of damage around New Zealand, and was said by many to be more powerful than the typhoon that hit a couple of decades ago.  We lost huge trees, and of course Sounding Free went up on the beach.  The mooring held just fine, but the oak sampson posts snapped like twigs.

As you can see in the photo, the bolt through the posts ended up being a weak spot...one that lasted for 20 years!  Fortunately they gave out when SF was near a relatively safe beach.

Our beach has lots of fist-sized rocks, though, so the repairs were over $9,000.

Yes, this is actually my sextant. Click on it for an introduction to Celestial Navigation
